We get our name from the Latin word for encaustic techniques: enkaustikos, "to heat or burn in." Encaustic painting predates Ancient Egypt, around 100-300 A.D., the crossroads of culture and trade. The colors for this set are made with either historical pigments or pigments that are close appoximations of those that would have been utilized by ancient artists. The Fayuum Mummy Portrait (A.D. 130-150) shown on the cover is a prime example of the legacy of encaustic painting.
Colors included in this set are Caput Mortuum, Prussian Blue, Pompeii Red, Cerulean Blue, Italian Golden Ochre, Vagone Green Earth, Bohemian Green Earth, Micaceous Iron Oxide, and Ultramarine Rose.
