Follow along with Steve Carpenter in this 3 hour 45 minute video as he demonstrates the steps to creating a vibrant portrait using the techniques of the Old Masters. Steve discusses and demonstrates lighting, posing the model, developing the grisaille (charcoal underpainting), use of transparent washes to establish middle tones, building form and personality through the application of opaque paint, and finally the details of completing the portrait. Throughout the demonstration Steve explains, in an entertaining and understandable way, what he is doing and why, affording clear insights into his style, philosophy, and the techniques employed by the Old Masters.
Steve Carpenter studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles, and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. His early career included work for Walt Disney and work as a freelance illustrator in Europe. He has studied extensively in European museums, focusing on paintings of the Old Masters. Steve painted and taught in Europe for over 30 years. His work has been exhibited internationally in 11 countries as well as locally. His patrons have included Princess Grace and Prince Rainier III of Monaco. Steve teaches at the Steve Carpenter Gallery and Art Center in Rochester, NY.
